How to play Blackjack

A guide to card values, actions, and game rules in Live Blackjack.

The aim of Blackjack is to beat the dealer by making a hand with a value closer to 21 than the dealer’s, without going over 21.

You can also win if the dealer’s hand exceeds 21, which is known as going bust. If your own hand goes above 21, you lose automatically.

This version of Blackjack is played with 8 decks of cards, which are shuffled by the dealer at regular intervals.

Getting started

  1. Select your seat at the table. Seats are numbered 1 to 7.

  2. Click on any available seat displaying Sit Here.

  3. Select your chip value from the Bank window.

  4. Click directly on the table to place your bet.

  5. Click the Confirm button in the Bank window before the timer runs out, otherwise your bets will be removed.

If you do not confirm your bet before the timer expires, the bet will be removed.

If a game is already in progress, wait for it to complete before joining.

Dealing the cards

When the round begins, each player receives two cards face up. The dealer also receives two cards, one face up and one face down.

Players take turns to act on their hands, beginning with the player on the right.

Card values

Card

Value

Numbered cards (2–10)

Face value

Jacks, Queens, Kings

10

Ace

1 or 11, whichever gives the best hand

If your first two cards total 21 (an Ace and a 10-value card), you have Blackjack. Blackjack pays 3 to 2 on the original stake. All other winning hands pay 1 to 1.

Player actions

Once it is your turn, you will be presented with the following options:

Action

Description

Stand

Take no further action on your hand

Hit

Take another card to improve your hand. Can be used multiple times

Double

Double your bet and receive one further card only

Split

Split two cards of equal value into two separate hands; an additional bet equal to the original bet is required

Split rules

If you split Aces, you receive only one additional card for each hand and cannot Hit.

A hand totalling 21 after a Split is not Blackjack because the cards were not the first two dealt. It therefore pays 1 to 1.

A hand cannot be split more than once.

Dealer rules

Once all players have acted, the dealer reveals their face-down card.

  • If the dealer’s hand is worth 16 or less, the dealer must take another card.

  • The dealer continues taking cards until the hand reaches 17 or higher.

  • If the dealer has a hand between 17 and 21, players whose hands are closer to 21 than the dealer’s are paid.

  • If the dealer goes bust, all remaining players are paid.

  • If your hand has the same value as the dealer’s, the round is a push or tie and your stake is returned.

Insurance

If the dealer’s face-up card is an Ace, all players are offered an Insurance bet.

The Insurance bet is equal to half the player’s original stake.

  • If the dealer has Blackjack, the insurance bet pays 2 to 1.

  • If the dealer does not have Blackjack, the insurance bet is lost and the round continues as normal.

Game malfunctions and errors

If a system error occurs, players will be notified through Chat or an on-screen message while the issue is investigated.

The game is paused and the dealer notifies a Shift Manager or Pit Boss.

  • If the error can be corrected, the game continues and concludes normally.

  • If the error cannot be corrected, the game is cancelled and the initial bets are refunded to all participating players.
